Mums’ Delight At A Slice Of Heaven

When Mahirah Ma Som, in a burst of inspiration sat down and wrote a poem to her mum, little did she expect that it would be selected as the grand prize winner for CloveTWO and A Slice Of Heaven's fabulous, specially designed couture KLutched Cake worth RM388. Imagine her delight.
"This is the first time I've ever won a contest," Mahirah said at the prize presentation ceremony at A Slice Of Heaven's Pavilion outlet. "Of course I was hoping to win but at the back of my mind I also thought, ‘who's gonna give away a prize for a silly poem.'"
Fortunately for Mahirah the contest judges thought her effort and touching words in tribute to her mum was a worthy winner.
"One of the criteria for the submissions was creativity, and all the entries received were very good making our choice to pick a winner extremely difficult," judge and Slice Of Heaven owner Nigel Skelchy explained. "Mahirah's entry was also very heartfelt and sincere."
Mahirah's mum, Zainab Abu Kassim, was all smiles and beaming with pride at her daughters achievement but was at a loss for words over the attention heaped onto her that day.
"I just hope I can live up to all the expectation," Zainab cheerfully said of her daughter's poem, adding. "The other stories were so touching."
Second and third prize winners were Sharon Neo and Susan Quah who received a Raspberry Torte and Blackforest Gateaux worth RM98.
Sharon had written in a story about how her mother's dedication, sacrifice and unconditional care through her sister's battle with ovarian cancer had opened her eyes to what an inspirational figure her mother is.
A mother herself Sharon, put pen to paper to honour her mother, little realising that her story had touched the hearts of readers and the judges alike.
According to Sharon her mother was very happy to hear that she had won but couldn't understand the fuss. After all, as Sharon explained, her mother did what came naturally without ever expecting anything in return. With a Raspberry Torte to savour Sharon is pretty sure her mother would appreciate the gesture.
Third prize winner Susan was unable to attend as, according to her husband Darren Fong who came in her place, she was in Sitiawan spending time with her mother. "Whenever she can Susan tries to ‘balik kampung' to see her mum. She never misses birthdays or special occasions," Darren informed.
Susan is a cancer survivor and her story too paid touching tribute to her mother who despite her modest income as a seamstress sacrificed to ensure that Susan would pull through her illness, which she did.
In her story Susan wrote that her mum doesn't have a favourite food but absolutely loves desserts, which is why Susan is thrilled to have a Blackforest Gatteaux to share with her mum.
All prizes were loving sponsored by A Slice Of Heaven. The specially designed couture KLutched Cake was a touch of inspiration and a joint effort between A Slice Of Heaven and homegrown exotic bag label KLutched.
